Keep The Duke Mansion Green!
Why We Need Your Help!
Driving up the boxwood-lined driveway is part of what makes a visit to the historic Duke Mansion so very special. You feel the sense of history while you walk the grounds – and think about the leaders of our community who have lived in this home over the majority of the 20th century.
The Duke Mansion, built in 1915, was tripled in size by its most famous owner, James Buchanan Duke. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Mansion is now protected as a nonprofit with all proceeds being used to preserve and protect this community treasure.
Taking care of those boxwoods and our 4.5 acres of grounds with literally hundreds of special trees and bushes is just as important as taking care of our historic home. With your help, we can make the investment of careful care in the winter months to help ensure that these grounds are lush and wonderful all year long.
Our grounds include the Judy Harrison Barry Children's Garden, a Peter Rabbit-themed garden, and two fountains that are original to Mr. Duke. The grounds are open to the public and enjoyed regularly by those people who are attending events, spending the night or just walking the historic neighborhood. Join us in making sure this special piece of our green heritage is healthy and strong with your gift.
More About Our Project!
Our 55 trees include five Mecklenburg County Treasure Trees - the oldest or largest in the county - and our grounds overflow with such classic southern trees as white oaks, magnolias, dogwoods and poplars. We also have seven of the amazingly fragrant Osmanthus that just finished blooming last month and hollies, Japanese maples, and flowering cherries. Our maintenance plan includes soil injection therapy along with trunk treatments to protect against insects and disease. Our 100 or so boxwoods will be hand-pruned to help maintain their health and their classic shape. We are always in a constant state of renewal – caring for our older trees and bushes to extend their lives and being prepared to plant and replant to keep the grounds beautiful.
While each part of this comprehensive plan is not costly - it might only be $65 per tree to do soil injection therapy or $625 to prune the large boxwood hedge - when you consider the care of the whole 4.5 acres and literally hundreds of trees, shrubs and bushes it definitely adds up!
