message from the executive director

The Lee Institute was started in 1997 to honor Bill Lee, who was a remarkable civic leader in our region. Since the inception of the Institute, we have worked primarily within the Charlotte region to promote collaboration around the public good.

We believe that public good is best found when a community seeks out and listens to a variety of voices and opinions. Our work over the past five years has been to help bring wider participation in all types of community work.

collaboraction

Currently, The Lee Institute is working on a number of collaborative projects :

  • Facilitating a pilot development process for the Infant Mental Health Working Group and Smart Start of Mecklenburg County. The Lee Institute recently researched and wrote a Needs Assessment as part of this project, which outlines existing and needed mental health resources for children ages zero to five in our community.
  • Designing a broad-based community process to support student achievement, an effort supported by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Click here to find answers to frequently asked questions on this work. For more information please contact Vi Lyles.
  • Working with the local education foundation, Mecklenburg Citizens for Public Education, as they reexamine their scope of work. MCPE is currently looking for a consultant to review decentralization efforts within Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. A request for proposal for the consultant is now available.
  • Working with Mecklenburg County Government to foster and strengthen relatioships between citizens and government, using a focus group approach.
