"Always in the big woods when you leave familiar ground and step off alone into a new place there will be, along with the feelings of curiosity and excitement, a little nagging of dread. It is the ancient fear of the Unknown, and it is your first bond with the wilderness you are going into. What you are doing is exploring. You are undertaking the first experience, not of the place, but of yourself in that place. It is an experience of our essential loneliness; for nobody can discover the world for anybody else. It is only after we have discovered it for ourselves that it becomes a common ground and a common bond, and we cease to be alone."
- Wendell Berry
"If that doesn't capture ALF and Outward Bound, I don't know what does! I know that each of us continues to explore and discover, and I also know that we all have our common bond - one that is so incredibly important to me. I often find myself caught up in my own wilderness - full of curiosity, excitement, and yes, a little nagging of dread. But I often think about you all - collectively and individually."

AMERICAN LEADERSHIP FORUM
The Charlotte Region Chapter of the American Leadership Forum is the
flagship program of The Lee Institute.
The American Leadership Forum (ALF) is a non-profit
organization, national in scope, dedicated to joining and strengthening
established leaders in order to serve the public good. It enhances
leadership by building on the strengths of diversity and by promoting
collaborative problem-solving within and among communities.
Annually, 20-25 leaders drawn from every sector throughout this region
are invited to participate in a yearlong intensive leadership development
program. The program consists of monthly seminars and intensive dialogue
on:
- collaborative leadership
- consensus
- conflict management
- understanding differences
- ethics
- leadership systems
ALF Fellows also participate in a five day wilderness experience, run
by North Carolina Outward Bound Professional. Upon graduation, these Senior Fellows
join an active network of over 2,500 graduates nationwide, and continue
to work together on regional problems. The deep relationships and networks
of responsibility developed during the ALF experience will provide important
benefits for the greater Charlotte region.
